Braces Overview

  • Overcrowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Misaligned jaws
  • Malocclusions (such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites).

How Do Braces Work?

Braces work by applying pressure over a period of time to slowly move teeth in a specific direction. As the teeth move, the bone changes shape as pressure is applied.

Types of Braces

Metal Braces

Metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel and consist of metal brackets. The bracket is attached to each tooth and connected by a thin archwire, which is periodically adjusted to guide teeth into position.

Metal braces are the most effective at treating very complex issues, and they often work faster at closing gaps and aligning teeth than other types. They are also the least expensive option. At Smilebliss, metal braces are only $2,998!

Ceramic Braces

They’re less noticeable than metal braces, making them a popular choice for patients who prefer less noticeable braces. In terms of cost, they’re more expensive than metal braces and the brackets can stain easily if not properly maintained.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are a series of tight-fitting, custom-made mouthpieces that slip over the teeth. Aligners are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. They are generally more comfortable than traditional braces.

Benefits of Wearing Braces

  • Improves oral hygiene
  • Enhances appearance and self-esteem
  • Correcting bite issues
  • Prevention of dental problems
  • Improved speech
  • Long-term dental health
  • Aiding digestive health

What to Expect: The Braces Journey

Getting braces is an exciting first step towards a straighter smile! Here’s a rundown of what you can expect:

The Initial Appointment

During your first consultation, the orthodontist will examine your teeth, discuss your goals, and recommend the best type of braces for you. X-rays or scans might also be taken to get a detailed picture of your teeth and jaw structure. Your initial consultation at Smilebliss is always free.

Getting Braces Placed

The appointment for placing braces typically takes one to two hours. Your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and dried, and then a special bonding agent will be applied to attach the brackets to each tooth.

A thin wire is threaded through the brackets and secured with rubber bands or tiny ties. You might feel some discomfort after, but it can be eased with pain relievers.

Adjustments and Checkups

You’ll see your orthodontist regularly, usually every four to eight weeks, for adjustments. Adjustments involve tightening the wires and making small changes to move your teeth gradually into their ideal positions.

Diet Adjustments

Especially in the first few days after getting braces or adjustments, you might need to stick to softer foods that require minimal chewing. You can gradually introduce more solid foods, but you’ll still need to avoid some foods, such as hard candy, nuts, and chewy snacks.

The Big Reveal

The entire treatment process can take anywhere from a few months to a few years (depending on a case to case basis).

But the wait will be worth it! Once your braces come off, you’ll get retainers to wear to ensure your teeth stay in their new positions, and you can enjoy your beautiful new smile!
