Getting braces is an exciting first step towards a straighter smile! Here’s a rundown of what you can expect:
During your first consultation, the orthodontist will examine your teeth, discuss your goals, and recommend the best type of braces for you. X-rays or scans might also be taken to get a detailed picture of your teeth and jaw structure. Your initial consultation at Smilebliss is always free.
The appointment for placing braces typically takes one to two hours. Your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and dried, and then a special bonding agent will be applied to attach the brackets to each tooth.
A thin wire is threaded through the brackets and secured with rubber bands or tiny ties. You might feel some discomfort after, but it can be eased with pain relievers.
You’ll see your orthodontist regularly, usually every four to eight weeks, for adjustments. Adjustments involve tightening the wires and making small changes to move your teeth gradually into their ideal positions.
Especially in the first few days after getting braces or adjustments, you might need to stick to softer foods that require minimal chewing. You can gradually introduce more solid foods, but you’ll still need to avoid some foods, such as hard candy, nuts, and chewy snacks.
The entire treatment process can take anywhere from a few months to a few years (depending on a case to case basis).
